Meshtastic is an open source, off-grid, decentralized mesh network built to run on affordable, low-power devices. No cell towers. No internet. It is exploding in popularity due to no license required, low cost devices, text-based messaging, encryption, and every device added contributes to the mesh network. The simplest devices connect to your cellphone via Bluetooth for a screen interface. My favorite is the LilyGo T-Deck which does not require a phone. My more complex sensor projects use the Raspberry Pi Pico and a Waveshare SX1262 LoRa module with an additional MCU for the sensor control.
