I have had a lot of fun with my 5.5W diode laser; though 30W is now available; and over 100W for a CO2 gass laser. I recommend visiting a MakerSpace (like Melbourne MakerSpace, FL) to try out their lasers first and learn the software and limitations. I primarily cut 3mm Balsa hobby plywood; though some types of acrylic is possible. Since I am a Linux fanatic the software I use is LaserGRBL and Inkscape for the .svg files. If you can stomach other operating systems, Bright Burn is recommended.

In getting to know a laser beginning with a test panel (included in the software) runs different speeds and numbers of passes.

Laser engraving and cutting generates smoke and other gasses and is best performed in a well-ventilated area. For this, I have it all on a cart that I can roll outside onto the patio. And do not forget to wear the cool green glasses!
